Forgetting your wallet might not be such a problem as a new app to launch this year will allow payments to be made through your smartphone.

The feature which allows you to scan a paper barcode or modern card reader with your mobile, will automate the payment after verifying a code – all in under 12 seconds.

A consortium of 18 banks have pooled together with developer Vocalink to provide this service for a potential 18million of customers at HSBC, First Direct, Nationwide, Santander and Metro Bank.

With over £6billion spent on Apple apps alone in 2013 it’s no surprise that banks have taken a vested interest in the lucrative market.

The App is intended to be launched this fall and will provide a more secure and speedy answer to shopping transactions. A direct link between Zapp and banks will also ensure that no secure information need travel to a third party, such as the retailer.

The Guardian reports that an anticipated 1 in 5 shopping outlets will operate Zapp from 2015 and that 20million people will be using their mobiles to pay for goods by the end of the decade.
