Last year programmer Patrick McConlogue made Leo Grand, who slept rough in his neighbourhood, an offer.

He could either take $100 then and there, no questions asked, or he could let Patrick give him coding lessons. Leo chose to learn coding and, in a modern retelling of the “teach a man to fish” fable, launched his first iPhone app shortly thereafter. Coding on a $200 Chromebook from park benches, Leo’s tale goes to show that with the right commitment, and some generous neighbours, anybody can launch a successful startup.
