It’s been a busy year here at Crunch. Over the last several months, we’ve been beavering away on a number of upgrades to our online accounting software including new services, new partnerships, and new packages, all to make life easier than ever for our 11,000 Crunch clients.
In that time, we’ve been fortunate enough to find ourselves nominated for multiple awards, bringing home the bacon on many occasions. This year alone, we’ve won the Mid-Tier Firm of the Year award from the British Accountancy Awards, the Large Firm of the Year award from the Accounting Excellency awards, and the Content Marketing Award at the British Accounting Marketing Awards.
As proud as we are of all of these achievements, the real reward is in seeing the changes we’ve been implementing behind the scenes to our online accounting software, improving the services we provide to our clients. With that in mind, we wanted to tell you all about the exciting software updates we’ve been making this year, and introduce you to our brand new Crunch software platform: Ada!
What is Ada?
Ada is the name of our new Crunch Platform – the underlying technology that supports all our online accounting software and services for our clients.
October 2019 saw us put the first visible changes live, with a new look, new navigation, and a new help and support section to our limited company software. This software update has been a labour of love for our awesome tech and design teams here at Crunch, and builds on the “under the hood” technology improvements we’ve been making over the past few years in preparation for some huge upcoming changes.
What’s already changed?
The software interface has been redesigned with mobile-first principles, which makes it easier to use across more devices with a cleaner, fresher design. We’ve made it easier to access our help and support within the software, as well as improving our videos and “How to” articles in the Crunch Help Centre.
We’ve given our software a fresh coat of paint, but don’t go thinking our updates are purely cosmetic! Coupled with this sleeker, more modern look comes a collapsible navigation bar that makes moving around the Crunch software easier than ever – allowing you to move swiftly between tabs, collapse the menu, work on your expenses, pop the menu back open again, and move on to your next task.
These changes enhance the experience of using the Crunch software on mobile, making it easier than ever to check your accounts and record your expenses on the go with Crunch.
What changes are coming?
Ada’s biggest and most exciting changes so far have been made to the underlying technology.
We’ve introduced a new single sign-on security environment that will allow us to consolidate the login to all our services. All of these behind-the-scenes changes mean we’ll be able to deliver future updates more frequently, with less downtime, and with enhanced security across all the services on our platform.
In the next few months, we’ll be rolling out updates to the most-used sections of the Crunch software- the ones that mean the most to our clients. These include:
- Sales invoices
- Banking, including reconciliation and integrations
- In-app video calls.
These are all part of a multi-million-pound investment we’re making to improve our software while continuing to innovate and provide the best possible user experience – none of which would be possible without Ada!
So, why Ada?
An excellent question! We didn’t just pick the name Ada for no good reason – we wanted a name that reflected the importance of these new software upgrades. One that paid homage to those who came before us, and upon whose shoulders we now aim to stand.
That’s why we’ve named our new platform after “The Enchantress of Numbers” herself – Ada Lovelace.
Who was Ada Lovelace?
Countess Augusta Ada Lovelace (1815-1852) was the daughter of Lord Byron, the famed English poet and politician. Unusually for the time, she was encouraged to study mathematics in an effort to prevent her from developing the same creative madness (or genius, depending on who you ask) as her father.
She worked closely with Charles Babbage, who first conceived the concept of a digital, programmable computer and created the first mechanical, general-purpose computer, known as the Analytical Engine. Ada was the first person to recognise the potential this machine had to perform far more than just calculations and published the first algorithm intended to be used on the machine.
Ada is recognised today as one of the world’s first computer programmers, and her work became invaluable in the early history of modern computer technology. The world could be a very different place if not for the influence of Ada Lovelace.
Our new platform will now act as the stable ground upon which we build out our Crunch software, and we can think of no-one better to name our platform after than Ada Lovelace.
Making Crunch as easy as one, two, three!
Our new software updates will help to develop the Crunch limited company accounting software over the course of the next few months, but that doesn’t mean we’re done there.
We believe that as our clients’ businesses grow, their accountancy support should grow, too. That’s why we launched a new Small Business package in 2018, designed specifically for small and growing businesses that require dedicated support.
Well, over the course of 2020, we’ll be introducing a new enhanced product range to support clients wherever they are on their self-employed journey, and show how we can help, and where we can take them:
- Crunch Chorus: Our free self-employed community, with networking events, a supportive Facebook group, free invoicing tool, and jargon-free business guides and videos to help get a business off the ground
- Crunch Software only: A software-only service that provides you with the software you need to record your invoices, expenses, match up with your banking transactions, and manage your books really simply
- Crunch One: A sole trader service, with accountancy advice and online software for the one-person businesses that are just beginning their self-employed journey or don’t want the increased statutory responsibilities of running a limited company. This will include our current sole trader packages
- Crunch Two: A full limited company accountancy service, for companies from initial formation through to an established business. This will include our current limited company Basic and Plus packages
- Crunch Three: A bespoke small business accountancy service for limited companies, particularly if they have multiple employees. With a dedicated accountant and bookkeeper to support limited companies that have grown to require more personal support. This will include our current Small Business package.
With this product range in place, clients will have a clear pathway for their business, safe in the knowledge that we’re ready to help their business grow wherever they are in their journey, all supported by Crunch’s ADA platform.
We’ll be talking more about Crunch One, Two, and Three next year, so keep your eyes peeled for future updates!
