No Limits to what one-hit-wonders can teach small businesses

As a part-time musician, I’ve got nothing against One Hit Wonders. Better to be a “One Hit Wonder” than a “No Hit Wonder”, right? Anyone able to escape a regular 9-5 drudgery by relying on the paychecks coming in from one song they wrote decades ago certainly deserves a little bit of credit.

What’s more, these flash-in-the-pan hits often contain aspirational messages, trumpeting the glee of independence and being a free spirit; a perfect soundtrack if you’re pondering over if (and how) to start your own business.

Need some tenuous but poignant inspiration? Lend us your ears. You may or may not regret it.

Babylon Zoo – ‘Spaceman’

Most of us remember that awfully shrill chorus from the 90’s Levis ad, but buried deep in the verses are a sad tale of the songwriter really wanting someone (perhaps say, an annoying co-worker) to go away as far away as possible.

The workplace can be a melting pot of ideologies, but if you’re surrounded by “the sickening taste of homophobic jokes” and “images of fascist folks”, it can seriously put a downer on your own morale. You deserve better.

Sure, you may wish you could shoot your insensitive workmates into space, but instead, why not get off the carousel and go it alone?

DJ Pied Piper – ‘Do You Really Like It?’

Indeed. sometimes you have to take a look at your professional life, and ask yourself “Do you really like it? Is it, is it wicked?”

If you’re not “lovin’ it, lovin’ it, lovin’ it”, it might be time to rethink your career. Check out these people who quit their jobs in style and think about what you’d rather spend your time doing.

Ultra Nate – ‘Free’

“You’re free to do what you want to do”. Correct! So stop settling for less, and find the cure for your humdrum lifestyle. Fancy following your dream of being a full time dog walker? Come on and try! Now’s the time – to download our free guide to starting your own business!

Crazy Town – ‘Butterfly’

Packing in your job without an action plan is not good practice. It takes a lot of preparation to metamorph into a fully fledged freelancer. You don’t even need to live in a cocoon, you can start spreading your wings before you’ve even fluttered away from your dead-end job. Here’s how to keep your second job from your boss so you don’t have to live in panic.

The real inspiration to be gained here thankfully doesn’t require you to listen to this drivel. If you ever start to doubt yourself, just remember, Crazy Town are somehow still touring and releasing music.

Scatman John – ‘Scatman’

Little known 53 year old musician John Larkin became an unlikely household name in 1995 via his smash hit single Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop). Despite suffering with a stutter throughout his life, the words (and gibberish) that seamlessly flowed from the late Scatman during his songs (well, this one anyway) propelled him to mainstream success.

Don’t let anyone or anything stand in your way. In the words of the man himself “If Scatman can do it, so can you”.

2Unlimited – ‘No Limit’

You can’t let negative thoughts get the better of you when it comes to taking a leap of faith. But think of all the times you had a great idea, and didn’t follow through on it. Where would you be if you’d had the self-confidence? As this timeless classic emphatically affirms:

“No, no. No, no no no. No, no no no. No no, there’s no limit!”

So do what you want, and do it with pride. You owe it to yourself.

“Let me hear you say yeah!”

With all the ups of being your own boss, there are always going to be downs. But to ensure you can get back up again, you need to have a solid business continuity plan.

If your business gets knocked down, money won’t be an issue if you’ve got business insurance.
