Do I need to submit a Self Assessment?
What is
Self Assessment?
Self Assessment is HMRC’s calculation of how much Income Tax and National Insurance you need to pay. It’s something you need to fill out and submit, before then paying the amount to the government.
People who are employed and pay tax through PAYE don’t need to complete Self Assessments for their main job - they’re usually for self-employed people or to pay tax on additional earnings (among others).
You can start the Self Assessment process for the previous tax year any time after 5th April. The final deadline to file is the following 31st January. If your only income is from your wages or from a pension, you don’t normally need to fill out a Self Assessment.
You need to complete a Self Assessment if:
- You’re self-employed and earn more than £1000
- You own your own company or are a partner in a business.
- You earn money from renting out property.
- You earn income from savings, investments or dividends (outside of tax-free ISA allowance).
- You earn money from abroad.
If in doubt, check the government website to see if you need to submit a tax return. Or, chat to one of our accountants.
How is Self Assessment tax calculated?
What is
Self Assessment?
You pay tax and NI on your total income after any reasonable expenses. If you have a student loan, your Self Assessment will also include this repayment.
We can calculate your Self Assessment for you with the answers to a few questions. Our expert team will run the numbers, choose all the correct tax brackets, and let you know how much tax you should be paying. Once you’re happy, we’ll submit the return for you.
