HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has rolled out a new online tool to help taxpayers make sense of compliance checks. The tool, first launched in April 2025 and updated in September, is designed to walk you through each stage of a check and make it easier to access support when you need it.
So, what is a compliance check?
Simply put, it’s when HMRC reviews your tax position to make sure you’ve paid the right amount, claimed the correct allowances and reliefs, and that the tax system is operating fairly.
During a check, HMRC might send you a letter asking for information, have discussions with you to clarify your tax position, and then work out the correct amount you owe before closing the review.
