For six years, Senior Accountant Joel Pout has been a steady hand at Crunch, leading the Infinity accountancy team and ensuring our clients’ finances stay accurate and on time. Whether he’s reviewing tax returns, answering complex queries, or improving our in-app payroll features, Joel’s focus is always on clarity and client confidence.
Inside the role of Senior Accountant
1. Joel, what does your role involve?
I’m responsible for the day-to-day running of the Infinity accountancy team, which means making sure every client we look after gets a consistently high standard of service. A big part of my job is reviewing clients’ tax returns and company accounts so they’re not only completed accurately but also turned around as quickly as possible. I also spend a lot of time helping clients directly, whether that’s providing guidance over the phone, troubleshooting an unexpected query, or simply giving reassurance when something complex pops up.
2. Can you give us a sneak peek of what a typical day looks like for you?
Most days start with checking our workflow and prioritising the returns or filings that need attention first. From there, I’ll start reviewing accounts and personal tax returns, making sure everything aligns with current regulations and deadlines. Throughout the day I’m also reviewing and filing company VAT returns, which keeps me on my toes because the rules can change quickly. In between, I field client queries by email or phone. Those conversations can range from simple clarifications to in-depth discussions about tax planning or long-term financial strategies. No two days are exactly alike, and that variety keeps the role interesting.
3. What’s something you’re especially proud of so far?
Recently, I was part of an internal team that updated our payroll offering within the Crunch app so it can correctly handle the employment allowance following the government’s changes for the current tax year. It might sound technical, but it’s a big win for our clients, they can now be confident their payroll calculations automatically reflect the latest legislation. I really enjoy projects like that because they combine my accounting knowledge with practical improvements that make life easier for the people who rely on us.
4. How do you approach managing and supporting your clients?
In my six years at Crunch I have formed good working relationships with several clients. Recently, I've been working with several of these clients to complete their company accounts as soon as possible to allow them to make use of HMRC's early payment interest for corporation tax.
This gets the filing done in good time, allows us to build long term plans together and also puts some money back in our clients pockets.

5. Beyond Crunch, what else should we know about you? Any hidden talents?
Outside of work I'm a keen cricket fan. I play for a local village (Firle CC) as a wicketkeeper and coach my son's junior team. I've come to realise I'm much better at teaching them how to play cricket than I am at playing it myself...
