Matt Kissell has been part of Crunch for 8 years, starting as a degree apprentice before moving into a full-time role as a JavaScript Developer in the Engineering department. Over the years, Matt has become a key member of the team, ensuring that Crunch’s platform is reliable, efficient, and constantly evolving to meet client needs.
Inside the role of JavaScript Developer
1. Matt, what does your role involve?
My role involves me being an active team member who focuses on and helps develop the main application, by providing new features and UI experiences.
It's my responsibility to create functional code that will deliver on feature requests and ensure the UI is up to a high standard both in terms of modern coding standards, but also accessibility and how easy it is for the client to access the tools and services that Crunch provides.
2. Can you give us a sneak peek of what a typical day looks like for you?
A typical day for me is focusing heavily on maintaining our codebase when it comes to new, or improving upon, features in our main application. I always start the morning catching up with the team to ensure everyone is up to date with all the new exciting changes the team is bringing to clients.
This discussion allows us to determine any blockers, dependencies to resolve and collaboration opportunities that will allow us to deliver the best experience for clients, by raising questions and making suggestions for UI specific considerations that can really benefit our clients.
If I have any meetings that occur throughout the day, this normally focuses heavily on planning and open discussions about ongoing and future work which really helps us to understand the services, products and features we aim to deliver.
3. Can you share something that you’re especially proud of so far?
Absolutely! I am particularly proud of the development of the MTD for Income Tax project we have been actively working on.
This is a new and complex project required for the upcoming 2026/27 tax year, which we are still working on but it's really amazing to see all the pieces falling into place. Given its complexity, to see how the UI has been tailored to make it as user friendly, accessible and as straightforward to use as possible, makes me very excited to deliver this to our clients in the near future.
4. How do you approach managing and supporting your team?
I'm always willing to walk through step by step on new processes, journeys or interactions to ensure everyone understands the changes made, mainly when supporting team members.
Let’s learn a little more about you
5. Tell us an interesting fact about yourself!
I am a huge travel and sport lover. I co-own, and helped set up, a local badminton league team as well as run my own 'No Strings' Badminton drop-in session to promote badminton to all ages and abilities.
Travelling is a big passion of mine. I travel a lot, and in most cases, I always look for a parkrun in a country before planning to visit. I am close to completing at least 1 parkrun in each European country that offers it by the end of 2025!
6. Beyond Crunch, what else should we know about you? Any hidden talents?
I have a hidden talent for navigating to places with very little to go from, an internal compass as some of my friends and family have put it. If I visit a new place, I can recognise key locations easily and once I have taken a route once, I can 90% of the time navigate back without needing a map or a phone, a good survival skill that I am very pleased to have.
