After sending her first invoice as a sole trader, Jennifer Lee O’Brien had the freelance bug. By being her own boss, she’s in charge of her own time and, with Crunch by her side, she no longer has to worry about getting confused by tax.
Jennifer established an impressive four-year career in content and editorial before making the leap to self-employment. The chance to collaborate with other creatives and clients was on she couldn’t miss, and Jennifer hasn’t looked back.
She explains: “I love the challenge of being a freelancer; it’s not always easy - it’s certainly not for everyone. But the ‘it’s sunny, I’ve got a coffee-in-hand, I run my own business, I just got paid’ days make it all worthwhile.”
“Crunch was there for me when I was already really overwhelmed about all aspects of being self-employed.”
Jennifer joined Crunch in November 2018 after admitting that tax wasn’t her forte. Jennifer says: “It wasn’t until I had to Google ‘how to do taxes UK' that I realised how impossible that can feel sometimes. Crunch made things simple and clear.”
“When I’ve anxiously emailed the team multiple questions in a row they’re always there to help; it gives me the confidence to get on with my work. I no longer doubt if I should have paid attention in maths class.”
Jennifer relishes the professional freedom that freelancing gives her. For anyone looking to follow in her footsteps, she advises: “It’s better to work with people that you get on with. Not every client, or project, is right for your business. Be nice and work with nice people. Don’t undersell yourself. And the odd time, finish work on a Friday at like, 2pm. Go read a book in the park or something. It’s the dream.”

Crunch have been our accountants for years, so it made perfect sense to use them as our mortgage brokers too (not to mention the fact that none of the others we approached had any expertise in dealing with self-employed applicants). There were some hiccups in the process, but Jamie and Gemma helped steer us through and we ended up with a great offer that I doubt we would have got with anyone else. Thanks guys!
Zoe was very helpful in getting me set up with crunch, highly recommend
I have been with Crunch for years. They are always available with help and advice and the software is about as simple as it is practical to be. Currently they are working on a new interface so I expect it will become even easier. Compared to the cost of an annual manual accountant it is seriously good value for money.
